Out + About: Electric Youthin' it at Glitterball

Last night I attended a really fun benefit called Glitterball that included sets by local (and one non-local) bands paying tribute to 80's music as per the theme of the evening. It's thrown by a great non-profit called I Rock The Cause, which is partnered with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and they work together to create a positive, life-changing experience through the power of music and community. There was an 80's make-over booth set up for those who didn't dress up, along with cheap beer and free beef jerky...lol. Held at the Music Box Theater on Nicollet, tickets were sold out and people were in full 80's regalia.

Rachel and I were giggling like teenagers getting ready as we delved right back into doing our hair the way we did over 15 years ago. She went with the crimped hair look (yes, she still owns her hair crimper) with pink/purple eyeshadow, while I went for the big hair look (lots of back-combing and height on the sides and bang area). It required aerosol hairspray (sorry Planet!) and A LOT of it. Whoa! Cough cough... those 80's were some excessive times.

The first band we caught were The Bloodsugars from NYC and as we walked into the theater, they were covering "She Blinded Me With Science". I really liked the lead singer's voice, a great fit for the night. They played original songs as well, check out their song "I Want It Back" on their website for free, it's reminiscent of old school Lionel Richie. It sounded GREAT live and he even played a Keytar (see above photo)! Second up was our personal favorite, The Notties covering ALL Guns 'n Roses -- ending it with a huge bang by bringing in a small orchestra section and playing November Rain! What?! Some serious awesomeness...and if you know me, you know I love Metal, so I was in hog heaven...ha ha. Covering Axl's voice is a huge undertaking (even for Axl these days), so big ups to the lead singer. Next up was White Light Riot as Spinal Tap...yes, Spinal Tap...lol. They ended the set with a piece of foam Stone Henge falling on the singer's head. The last band we caught was Alison Scott lending her strong vocal pipes to AC/DC, Journey, Pat Benatar, etc.

Today, I am paying for the hefty price of returning to the glam metal life of sex, drugs and rock and roll! Just kidding (partly). But it was all worth it as I think I laughed harder than I have in ages when I tripped due to my thigh-high stiletto boots and was saved by grabbing my friend John's tough-as-nails hair in front of me! I'm so sorry, John, but you saved me from a possible broken nose or bones.

A great cause, a great evening and saved by HAIR. The 80's rule.
